The Atlantic Wall
In the year 2000 I decided to photograph in a photo journey of several weeks the bunkers
of my childhood in France before they become a victim of the sea and the tooth of the time.
For most of the black/white photos I used an old Agfa camera from the 1930th. The same
camera, which was used by my German grandfather
– a medical orderly – to make countless photos of German atrocities during World War II at the east front already.
It was forbidden with death penalty however at that time.
Because of the roll film in the old Agfa some photos were exposed partly doubly. |

Le Mur de l'Atlantique
En 2000, j'ai décidé de photographier les bunkers de mon enfance lors d'un
voyage de plusieurs semaines en France, avant qu'ils deviennent victime de la mer et des
ravages du temps. La plupart photos sont en noir et blanc, faites avec un vieil appareil
de photo "Agfa" des années 1930. C'était l'appareil, avec lequel mon
grand-père
allemand a fait de nombreuses photos dans l'Est pendant la Deuxième Guerre
Mondiale montrant des atrocités commises par des Allemands ce qui était
interdit sous peine de mort.
La pellicule en bobine à utiliser pour les vieux appareils "Agfa" produisait parfois que quelques photos ont été exposées deux fois. |

Der Atlantikwall
Im Jahr 2000 habe ich mich entschlossen, in einer mehrwöchigen Foto-Reise die Bunker meiner
Kindheit in Frankreich zu fotografieren, bevor sie dem Meer und dem Zahn der Zeit ganz zum Opfer
fallen. Die meisten Schwarz/Weiß-Fotos habe ich mit einer alten Agfa-Kamera aus den 1930ern
gemacht, jener Kamera, mit der schon mein deutscher Großvater
im 2. Weltkrieg an der Ostfront zahllose Fotos von deutschen Greueltaten geschossen hat, was
damals allerdings bei Todesstrafe verboten war.
Der Rollfilm der alten Agfa brachte es manchmal mit sich, dass Fotos teils doppelt belichtet wurden. |
